Israel is reportedly considering bringing back the former system for directly electing the prime minister. According to The Times of Israel, no final agreement has been reached on this proposal yet, and it has not been introduced in the parliament.

Parliament seat distribution

The Israeli parliament has a total of 120 seats, and the support of at least 61 members of parliament is mandatory to form a government. In the recent election held on October 27, parties supporting Benjamin Netanyahu secured 53 seats.

In the same election, the opposition alliance won 48 seats, while Arab parties secured 19 seats. These results have intensified discussions surrounding the political equations in the country.

Upcoming parliamentary swearing-in

Amid these developments, The Times of Israel reported that all 120 members of the new parliament are expected to take their oath of office on November 10.

Notably, separate elections for the post of prime minister were previously held in Israel in the years 1996, 1999, and 2001.
