Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government in Poland is facing allegations of taking over constitutional institutions. Amid these developments, a political crisis has deepened in the country, accompanied by an escalating dispute over judicial appointments.
Suspension of tribunal officials
Constitutional Tribunal Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska has suspended Tribunal President Bogdan Swieczkowski and Vice-President Bartlomiej Sochanski for one month. Following the suspension, she took over the responsibilities of the Constitutional Tribunal President herself.
Meanwhile, President Karol Nawrocki returned to the country mid-way through his visit to Senegal. The opposition and the president have accused the government of attempting a coup.
President returns amid coup allegations
Parliament elected six new judges for the Constitutional Tribunal this March, of whom the president swore in only two. The opposition claims that Anna Korwin-Piotrowska does not have the authority to lead the tribunal.
