Xerostomia, or dry mouth, is a medical condition in which the mouth does not produce sufficient saliva and a persistent dryness is experienced. Dr Rohit Sharma, senior consultant in internal medicine at Apollo Spectra Hospital in Jaipur, has shared detailed information regarding this issue.

Causes of dry mouth

Common causes of dry mouth include dehydration, side effects of specific medications and breathing through the mouth while sleeping. Additionally, autoimmune diseases such as diabetes, thyroid disorders and Sjogren syndrome can also directly or indirectly cause the mouth to become dry.

Health effects of saliva deficiency

A lack of saliva in the mouth can lead to various health problems. It can cause tooth cavities, bad breath and considerable difficulty in eating, drinking and swallowing food.
