Imams and hardline leaders in Iranian mosques raised demands to build nuclear weapons during Friday prayers. In the western city of Kuhdasht, the Friday prayer imam spoke about becoming armed with nuclear weapons.
In Tehran, Friday prayer imam Akbari called changing the nuclear policy a necessity for the country. According to security official Mohsen Rezai, the government is discussing withdrawing from the NPT and reviewing its nuclear policy.
Shift in public sentiment and existing restrictions
According to Iran expert Mohammad Ali Shabani, public sentiment in Iran is shifting following American attacks. However, the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had issued a fatwa banning the making and use of nuclear bombs.
President Masoud Pezeshkian and former president Hassan Rouhani want to keep Iran's nuclear program peaceful. It remains unclear what the new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei thinks of this debate or whether the government will change its policy.
