Xerostomia, or dry mouth, is a health condition in which the mouth does not produce enough saliva or creates a sensation of dryness. Saliva is produced by the salivary glands.

Dr Rohit Sharma, senior consultant in internal medicine at Apollo Spectra Hospital in Jaipur, shared this information regarding dry mouth.

Common causes and medical conditions

Common causes of dry mouth include side effects from certain medications, dehydration, and breathing through the mouth during sleep.

Additionally, dry mouth can occur in autoimmune diseases such as diabetes, thyroid disorders, and Sjogren's syndrome. However, dry mouth does not necessarily occur in every thyroid patient.
