Jawaharlal Nehru University Social Science Department professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has been dismissed following complaints by female students. The university internal committee found multiple allegations of sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour against him to be correct during its inquiry.

According to the complaints, the professor was accused of asking female students about their dating history, boyfriends and personal lives. Additionally, students alleged that the professor behaved inappropriately during classes and during vivas at his residence.

Dismissal and police action

Following the inquiry report, the university administration dismissed the professor on October 9, 2026. Two days later, on October 11, 2026, an FIR was also registered against the professor with the police.

Professor denies allegations

In this matter, Professor Bimol has completely rejected all allegations levelled against him. He described this action as a witch-hunt targeted against him. On the other hand, the internal committee has also faced accusations of negligence and of suppressing the inquiry report for several months.
