Long-distance bus fares in Madhya Pradesh are being charged above prescribed rates during the Diwali festival. On multiple routes, the situation has escalated to the point where bus travel has become more expensive than air travel, causing difficulties for passengers.

The government implemented revised bus fare rates from August 5, 2026, increasing ordinary bus fares from 1.25 rupees to 2 rupees per passenger per kilometre. Despite this, passengers are compelled to pay arbitrary fares during the festive season.

High fares on key routes

The fare situation on various routes is notably high. On the Bhopal-Ahmedabad route, flight tickets range between 5,500 and 6,500 rupees, whereas BR Travels is charging up to 7,000 rupees for a luxury bus.

Similarly, on the Bhopal-Rewa route, a flight ticket is approximately 3,700 rupees while sleeper bus fares have reached up to 5,000 rupees. On the Bhopal-Gwalior route, a bus ticket from Jai Bhavani Travels is displayed at up to 10,000 rupees.

Association demand and official stance

The Madhya Pradesh Bus Owners Association had previously requested a fare hike, citing increases in diesel, maintenance, and operational costs. Meanwhile, transport department and RTO officials have stated that action will be taken against operators charging fares higher than the prescribed rates.
